Gas-fired in Heavy Reduction

Clay,
slip, feldspar, iron,
quartz, dioxides, oxides

These ceramic forms illicit movement yet are inherently still. The conical shape creates motion by simultaneously pulling you into the form while looking at it from above and pushing your eye out and upwards when viewed straight on. Each opposing force working seamlessly together creates a tension and anxiety. However, this is calmed and soothed with the stillness of the final piece, keeping you frozen between two actions.

The pieces are made with California clay and added materials such as feldspar, iron, and quartz. These natural materials are pulled from the mountains outside of Los Angeles. They are worked into the clay body as well as mixed with various layers of slip on the surface. The roughed surfaced gives the work a natural aesthetic, almost as if they were pulled directly from the earth.
